Fashion is in the midst of a swingeing change of proportions and garment-choice this autumn. It’s obvious which clothes are in favour: trousers and coats, blouses and jackets, knitwear and skirts – that is, separates, not dresses. This has been bruited as a “return” to minimalism and a great thing for a grown woman’s sanity. We’re promised we’ll be able to bound out looking effortlessly co-ordinated, while radiating dignity and competence. We will, but only, I’ve realised, after we’ve tackled the hellish confusion of this season’s heels.

“Effortless” is hardly the way to describe the search for footwear to match this season’s trousers and longer skirts. I discovered this after trotting off to Selfridges’s new gigantic shoe world (eight rooms, 11 individual branded boutiques, hundreds of shoes and boots to try on), where I imagined I’d be in danger of spending far more than I ought. An hour and a half later, I was back on Oxford Street, empty-handed, fuming over the fact that most footwear design hasn’t yet caught up with the leading edge of fashion.

All I gleaned from that wasted trip was the realisation that the monstrous platforms and rock-chick shoe-boots slavishly worn with the short dresses and leggings of the past few years are still endemic. Just looking at them makes me nauseous. Needless to say, they’re wrong with this season’s trousers and mid-calf skirts, which happens to be all I want to wear.

The stacked-heeled ankle boot, £60

Thrashing out what’s right has taken a hell of a time. This is due, partly, I admit, to the wrench it takes to break a fashion addiction built up over years: the plus side of elevated heels was feeling six inches taller and skinnier. When stepping into this season’s anti-platform, non-statement shoes, there’s that fear to conquer; with these new silhouettes, frumpier and dumpier must be circumnavigated.

Having scrutinised all the catwalk shows that featured trousers and longer skirts, I pulled out everything in my wardrobe that resembled them, plus all the shoes I’ve accumulated over 10 years. And now I have conclusions: when you whittle it down, there are two types of footwear necessary to make this season’s clothes viable – a pair of pointy stilettoes and some sort of block-heeled boots.

Trousers are the tricky part, because they come in three shapes:

1) Wide-legged. Footwear appears not to matter with these pants, because the point is that the hem covers the shoe, thus making it invisible, except when walking. That means you can take advantage of the old Seventies leg-lengthening illusion: high, stack-heeled boots or platforms, but roundish or squared in the toe, not pointed. You could also wear socks with an old pair of chunky sandals – the point is to cover and de-emphasise foot-awareness. (Study: 3.1 Phillip Lim, Marc Jacobs, Dries Van Noten.)

2) Boot-cut. This Nineties’ revival takes finessing. It needs streamlined, narrow-heeled boots with a slightly pointed toe, probably in suede. Frida Giannini at Gucci styled her revived boot-legs with open-toed sandals and black tights. (Study: Balmain, Gucci.)

3) Narrow-leg, cropped. For women who’ve been living in leggings, these slim trousers might seem the easiest segue into a new look. The key is to ditch those grotesque “statement” shoes and invest in pointed stilettos to wear to reveal chicly bared ankles. The most versatile and flattering height is around three inches, the über-ideal being a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s timeless spindly-heeled suede courts. Alternatively, there’s the rockabilly way to do it, as exemplified by Isabel Marant’s Fifties pointed courts with cropped jeans – how right they are is testified by the fact that they sold out by mid-August. What to wear with new-length skirts:

1) The Fifties-look circle. The obvious companion for the belled, petticoated skirt is the “petite stiletto” or a 1.5-inch Louis heel with a point decorated with a bow. At the designer end, Tabitha Simmons and Giambattista Valli have mouth-watering evening options, and at the other, Marks & Spencer has a £15 patent version and New Look, one by Giles Deacon at £24.99. Close study of the Louis Vuitton pumps shows they, in fact, have a high- stacked heel rather than a stiletto. (Study: Prada, Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten.)

2) Below-knee A-line. A skirt with which both the pointed stiletto and the block-heeled boot work, thus side-stepping the frump issue. There are subtle differences within A-line, though. As a rule of thumb, if it’s bias-cut, sinuous, tending towards the Thirties, wear the stiletto. If it’s stiff and skewing Seventies, use the chunky-heeled boots.

Fashion news 2010: Underwear with an urge to be seen: Sometimes, it’s the underpinnings that prove to be the crux of a look – the bandaged breasts of flappers, the waspie waists of the Fifties – and never more so than this season. Peekaboo sheer blouses, racy, lacy dresses and dangerously curvy Fifties-inspired pieces shine the spotlight on undergarments, begging the question: “What should the fashionable gal have in her top drawer?”

To my mind, one of the most joyous things about the return of the full, A-line dirndl skirt is that, for once, one’s underwear doesn’t have to be seamless, hideous, hearing-aid beige. The knickers with bows that looked lumpily bizarre under body-con dresses can come out of the drawer, as can previously purposeless petticoats, peeking cheekily from the swirling hems of skirts. Having gone for so long trying to make underwear invisible and discreet, it’s refreshing for those of us who don’t bound along bra-less like a Brazilian supermodel to be able to show lacy snippets and pretty straps.

Designers are wholeheartedly in agreement. Dolce & Gabbana have long been advocates of large pants and extra-curricular bra straps under a cocktail dress, while Jean Paul Gaultier, creator of Madonna’s cone bra, is renowned for his underwear-ish outerwear, and styles his collections by layering négligées visibly beneath a frock or trench. He has now turned his hand to actual knickers and bras with a collection for La Perla, out in November.

There are plenty of lingerie elements that will make this season’s penchant for all things sheer translate into real life. A lace dress is the perfect showcase for a delicate slip, such as La Senza’s lacy nude styles or Topshop’s vintage-looking ones, while a pair of luxurious silk shorts is begging to be teamed with a bright camisole. Meanwhile, a sheer pussy-bow blouse gets decidedly less bookish when worn over a decadent silk bustier (top of the range is Carine Gilson’s Thème Céres version, £650, net-a-porter.com).

The cruel irony, though, is that your unmentionables must be considered for both form and function. Let’s face it, your sexiest clothes have never permitted you to wear your sexiest underwear. But, hurrah of hurrahs, hideous second-skin shape-wear can take a back-seat as tummies relax under flattering folds of fabric. The new silhouette (think Christina Hendricks) requires more of a wasp waist than a board-flat stomach, so something along the lines of a waspie shaves an inch off your waist and gives a delicious hourglass shape. For a modern equivalent, check out Annette’s Power Curves waist-cincher (£41, figleaves.com).

If you need a little extra help fitting in those hip-hugging pencil skirts, there are more comely versions of shape-wear. Spanx Haute Contour is the prettier, lacy version (£125, figleaves.com) of its famed cycling-shorts style, and the Made by Niki Fresh Foundations line of slips (from £81.50, madebyniki.co.uk) look more Helmut Newton than Nora Batty. To smooth bra-flab and waistlines, Yummie Tummie’s Tummie Control lace-trimmed cami (£75, figleaves.com) will do its job and peek out cheerfully from under a cardigan or blouse. For those who still love bust-to-knee slimming, invest in Roland Mouret’s Powermesh slip (£265, net-a-porter.com) which is made from the magical sucking-in fabric with which he lines his famous Hollywood-glam dresses.

There’s nothing worse than an expanse of unsexy, functional, moulded cup slipping out of a blouse. My favourite kind of bra is the balconette because it turns your cleavage into a fabulous shelf, the sort described as “heaving” in historical novels and possessed by foxtrels like Brigitte Bardot. Chantelle and La Perla make wonderful lacy balconettes with beautiful straps suitable for showing off and Mimi Holliday’s black-and-white Minuit bra (£43, at John Lewis, 0845 604 9049) would cheer up a plain dress. For those over a D cup, Panache’s Sienna balconette basque (£40, 0845 270 6222) would look magnificent worn solo with a big swishy skirt and cardie.

Like the owner of a delicious yet delicate fragrance, gorgeous underwear is usually imperceptible except to those within kissing distance. For this season, however, kissing distance has a markedly larger radius, so choose your drawers with as much care as your dresses because equal attention will be paid to both.

To autumn (nearly), season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, reaper of the wicked sundress and emissary of fresh trends. Only “trends” is problematic as it signifies the fleeting – and this fashion phase is a volte face.

The chief missive is “timelessness” – not for the last time will the minimalism masterclasses of Phoebe Philo at Céline and Stella McCartney be cited. If you’re hunting for a pagoda-shouldered jacket, this is not the season. Even hip glossy LOVE celebrates “all things feminine” in its new issue, gushing how “during Fashion Week, a more voluptuous woman was sauntering her way into the spotlight: a new feminine silhouette, a full-blooming figure whose roots lay back in the Fifties”.

Pared down versus in-your-face curves, minimalism versus maximalism: foes set for an epic autumnal wardrobe fisticuff, right? Only if they didn’t share a collective motto, Strictly for Grown-ups – a rallying cry that unites other visual spars like neutrals vs leopard prints, and trousers vs midi-skirts. The real war? Streamlining your buys for the new season: charge forth with this battle plan.

A patch on a man's jacket used to be a sign of a repair job. Today it means you’ve been paying attention to the catwalks.

One of the overarching trends in menswear this season is the use of panels and patchwork on anything from biker jackets to T-shirts. And depending on how it is used, it can produce very different results.

Navy blue with white piping and red and white striped sleeves for an eccentric collegiate feel at Dries Van Noten

Raf Simons is a designer who is known for his modernist approach to structure and silhouette. For his own label (he also designs for Jil Sander), Simons added skinny panels of red wool into tailored black jackets, producing a De Stijl type graphic. He also created curious hybrids where wool overcoats featured large built in sections nylon and Velcro, giving an idea of where the evolution of the overcoat might take us. Simons’s man of the future is the heir to the Mod.

Dries Van Noten has used a patchwork approach this autumn with sleeves made from different coloured fabrics.

At Jil Sander, suiting was patched with panels of the same fabric, but were less geometric. The curved edge panels seemed to mould around the body; in gunmetal grey it has the look and feel of armour.

Raf Simons added panels of red for to the body and sleeves of his tailoring.

In the hands of designers with a more artisanal approach to clothing, such as Dries Van Noten, the use of a patchwork conjures up a more eccentric feeling. You’re going to need to be a bit more daring to tackle this one, where grey hoodies feature houndstooth arms, navy jackets sprouted white with red stripe arms and black trench coats are given camel-coloured sleeves.

Issey Miyake made the look feel a bit more street with mandarin collared shirts made from three different sizes of yellow and black gingham.

There are early signs of this on the high street, too. Asos’s own collection for men this season includes a khaki crew neck sweat pot with an interesting quilted panel on the elbows and one shoulder. Topman has produced a cotton shirt with chocolate brown corduroy on the shoulders which veers on the side of cowboy. But there’s bound to be more. It’s certainly a detail to keep an eye out for over the next couple of months.

A whole theme of multifunctional clothes is wafting through the current menswear season in Paris, which was apparent on the runway of the spring 2011 collection by Hermes presented Saturday, June 26, in the Grand Palais. On the runway of Hermes menswear designer Veronique Nichanian, we witnessed hyper elegant cotton shirts, that thanks to a zipper and a great technical finish could be worn either as classy shirt or a gentlemanly modernist jacket on a steamy sunny day. Or take her mini check shirt jackets, great for a summer shower, chic in a hotel lobby.

“Lightness and polyvalence,” smiled Nichanian, in between TV interviews, post show.

The collection also welcomed the return of the Hermes Pegasus, the ancient Greek winger horse, which reared across maroon silk shirts worn with flowing second-skin suede pants. A fresh look, suggestive both of a hip billionaire and yet also old money. Pegasus soared too on a dazzling white shirt, a collector’s item look, and timely culturally seeing as mythology greatest steed has just made a comeback in the recent remake of “Clash of the Titans,” albeit in black, rather the classic white.

Continuing a colonial revival trend from Milan, Hermes showed sandals and espadrilles with rope stripes, double belt faded copper leather belts and twisted silver bracelets, all very unfussy luxury.

To her considerable credit, Nichanian is a key component in the continuing success story of Hermes, which scored an 18 percent rise in sales to $650 million in the latest quarter. In that period, she feted the opening of a special Madison Avenue men’s boutique townhouse, underlining the brand’s belief in her talent.

Her most popular look was a dashing, and finely buffed, curly haired model in just a pajama bottoms and sandals, carrying a weekend bag out of which hung a cashmere jersey. This Adonis literally brought gasps out of a score of women in the audience – the ultimate compliment in a real sense.

Another idea certain to be popular next spring were the madras checks featured in windbreakers in triple layers of technical gauze, once again multifunctional looks, ideal in lots of social or professional situations, cleverly blurring the line between the two.

Copenhagen Fashion Week: YDE show

Ask an English fashion writer about Danish fashion, and their thoughts usually turn to the easy, sexy, chic, commercial-in-a-good-way labels like Day Birger et Mikkelson, Rutzou or By Marlene Birger.

What we don't normally associate with the Danish fashion industry is luxury and sophistication, both in the precision of cut and in the fabrics. Yet this week I've seen two runway shows that challenge this common misconception: YDE & Noir.

The first was from a 31 year old Danish designer, the charming Ole Yde, showing under the YDE name, whose confident and assured salon show for just 250 people at the Georg Jensen store wouldn't have looked out of place in Paris. This was a coherent, clear and polished collection, aimed at an elegant, self-possessed woman.

Currently self-funded, this is a designer whose work cries out for an investor to take him to the next level: he needs to be showing abroad where there is a market for this kind of luxe approach.

I was invited to Catbit Fashion Show last week at TwentyOne. It was a public event but thanks to fellow blogger Yat, only I knew about the event. Let me tell you a bit about Catbit:

Catbit boutique was founded by Vincent Ng, a local entrepreneur who ventured into the fashion retail field and has built a chain of affordable fashion retail stores with a steady growth just under two years. Importing the latest designs from korea, taiwan and japan, the brand prides itself in offering the latest fashion trends at an affordable price for the average shopper.

London Fashion Week: The 'F' Factor

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a feminist movement, but London Fashion Week has certainly seen the birth of a new breed - let's call her the "Feminista". She's female, has her own label, and an instinctive grip on what suits her and her customers.

The reality of women fashion designers becoming a modern force not just to be reckoned with, but one which is now shaping the look of 21st-century dressing, took hold at the last round of designer catwalk shows in March, in Paris, when Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo at Céline and Hannah MacGibbon at Chloé, formed a troika which delivered a grown-up, rather than girlie, wardrobe for this autumn/winter. So it was classic; so what? The reason it worked so well was because two of them (McCartney and Philo) are married and mothers, and all three wore their own designs, giving them hands-on experience of what works. They are the ideal role models for generations of women torn between trends.

The concept has caused something of a mini-revolution at London Fashion Week. More than half of the designers who are showing their spring/summer 2011 collections are women. That statistic is hardly earth-shattering, except that it is in a city where the future of style was once predicated on the sexual legacy of legions of male designers, not least John Galliano, the late Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan. "Who will be the next Galliano or McQueen?", used to be the cry, not "Who could be the new Vivienne Westwood?"

No fashion critic would dream of discounting the impact of directional designers such as Christopher Kane, Erdem, Jonathan Saunders, Richard Nicoll and Burberry's Christopher Bailey. Then there is Giles Deacon, whose return-to-London show on Monday, after two seasons in Paris, starred the 71-year-old supermodel, Veruschka, and the "aristo" model, Stella Tennant, now 40 and a mother of four.

But it's the "Here come the girls (and women)" contingent who are indulging in romantic inspirations that, at times, beggar belief, yet never stray into the realm of costume.

Take Mary Katrantzou, 27, and Holly Fulton, 32, the print wizards who lend their graphic insight and surreal vision to clothes that are sculptural and shapely. See Louise Amstrup, too, whose designs were inspired by an exotic desert mood. Although Louise Gray's pieces may not always be wearable, her catchy recycling and sense of colour is inspiring, as is the tonal vibrancy of pieces by the Felder Felder twins, Annette and Daniela. Meanwhile, Roksanda Ilincic moved on from quirky draping to a kaftan/djellaba-inspired volume.

It was not just the edgier, younger designers who were breaking the mould, either. Betty Jackson took flight with a feathered fantasy, which included the most delectable pair of black, ostrich-feather trousers I have seen. Nicole Farhi stunned followers with a foray into the fetish world, using Latex for bustiers, pencil skirts and kimono-sleeve dresses because "it's clean, shiny, modern and sexy." Maria Grachvogel focused on dramatic lightning prints in liquid silhouettes, and Vivienne Westwood, forever young-at-heart, strode the catwalk, singing to Elvis's cover version of You'll Never Walk Alone, after showing some of the most wearable dresses and trouser suits of the season, even if the "waistbands" were lowered to crotch-level to show off boy-like boxers in floral prints. Arguably the biggest fashion event in Malaysia, M-IFW is an ongoing effort by the Malaysian International Fashion Alliance (mifa) to support the professional development of local fashion designers and promote the Malaysian fashion industry in the global arena. This is the eight instalment of the annual event and it will take place at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from Nov 2 to 6. Popular local designers such as Michael Ong, Datuk Bernard Chandran, Datuk Farah Khan and Eric Choong are among the 70 Malaysian designers who will showcase their designs at the five-day event. International brands such as Emilio Pucci, Helmut Lang and Halston will also make an appearance at M-IFW’10, which will feature 18 fashion showcases altogether. Up-and-coming new designers from Malaysia will get a chance to flaunt their creations at the event too.

Endorsed by Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation or Matrade, the M-IFW also attracts trade and industry members including designers, fashion buyers and lifestyle media from the Asian region, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

Highlights for M-IFW’10 will include the launch of Maxis’ online/mobile fashion portal, a photography exhibition featuring 100 iconic Malaysian personalities by renowned local photographer Bustamam Mokhtar, the annual Malaysia-International Fashion Awards (M-IFA) Gala as well as a charity children’s fashion show entitled Fashion Gives Back for the opening slot.

The Fashion Gives Back exhibition, which will be set up in Café Stelle in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from Nov 2 for two weeks, is done in collaboration with renowned Malaysian human sculptor Khing Chan. The exhibition is a preview of the art showpieces that Chan will create for the charity auction in June next year.

The art pieces that will be created for the charity auction include 20 boxes comprising life-like figurines of famous fashion personalities such as Bernard Chandran, Karl Lagerfeld, Asian supermodel Liu Wen and Anna Wintour. The figurines will be paired with limited edition items from 20 luxury brands including Tiffany & Co. Further, the signature art piece that will be up for auction is a miniature model of the stage of M-IFW’10. Seated at the front row of the miniature stage will be sculptures of famous international and Malaysian personalities, including our current Prime Minister.

The highest bidder will not only win the entire miniature stage art piece along with the sculptures and a chandelier courtesy of Alfo lighting, he or she will also be sculpted by Chan and be placed next to the Prime Minister in the art piece.

The funds raised via the event will be channeled to selected organisations to help children. Celebrity host and model Deborah Henry spearheads sponsorship efforts for the charity project.

In conjunction with M-IFW’10, mifa together with Maxis and Enrich Malaysia Airlines, is also organising a Paris contest that is open to all Maxis users.
